Consider this post on "midwits":

>but for sure there's a sort of educated-idiot or overhyped-man-baby syndrome that these people fall into where they are given positions of power and are considered to be people who should know things (like basically all politicians, and many doctors and therapists, basically all professionals who know just enough to do their jobs but dont take it further and think for themselves, or are given purview over a wider area than their real knowledge should apply to by even less knowledgeable people, mostly politicians here) or just consider themselves to be thing-knowers because they're autistic and it strokes their ego, idk whatever

The flip side of that is the conspirasoid schizo who says all the experts are wrong because they hyperfocus autistically on some little inconsistency or detail or small anomaly which for the expert to explain why it isn't correct would take months of instruction in the background data or years, the problem is on the internet people think they're experts by googling shit and what they're interpreting as "midwittery" is actually an educated person who's too exasperated to spend hours of their time hand holding a schizoid through all the actual arguments on evidence for the 99999th time so they just dismiss them. not that the schizoid even wants that because their eyes would glaze over if they had to sit through that anyway. So when the educated person dismisses them they say "SEE, I knew it!".

Years of education actually give in addition to formal knowledge a sort of tacit knowledge which is useful in dealing with ideas and arguments and research has shown university education makes people less prone to believing conspiracy theories. Educated people are more humble about the limits of their knowledge because they actually are more aware of the extent of total knowledge out there and the amount of work actually needed to learn and internalize it and therefore respect experts more. OTOH people with less education can often be pretty arrogant and run roughshod over expertise and scientific consensus because they don't respect or value education and knowledge. Which is what leads to them thinking the gap between what they know and an expert knows is something that can be corrected with a few days of googling.

This is why the midwit meme is dumb, it attacks whats actually pretty good advice (getting data and sources for shit) in favor of some gut instinct bullshit. 99% of people other than those who are legitimately on the cutting edge of new knowledge would be best served to actually read shit, and rejecting that in favor of making up your own bullshit is in my experience largely intellectual laziness to learn shit like science. It's flat earther mentality but applied to everything.

It's this sort of arrogance that leads a dropout starcraft gamer to debate a harvard educated economist like he's dumb and think that he actually looks good or convincing. The real midwits are the ""Sargons"" of this world, not a random doctor.

(also thats a quote from me, weird. thats weird.)
>and research has shown university education makes people less prone to believing conspiracy theories
Many conspiracy theories are right though ;)

>Educated people are more humble about the limits of their knowledge because they actually are more aware of the extent of total knowledge out there and the amount of work actually needed to learn and internalize it and therefore respect experts more.

this is 2 different things, 1. is that they know what it takes to develop and learn new information, 2. is that they respect authorities more

I've only really seen 1. from people directly involved in science. For other people, this doesnt always apply. They can be just as dumb because they never had to learn shit about how to learn except "read this thing, research this stuff in library or on web", they might get statistics better if they wrote papers, but overall they can be just as retarded.
As for trusting experts, it's one thing to blindly trust them because they're experts, and another to listen carefully to the claims they make, and look at their data, and then cross reference with other data in order to verify or disqualify whether or not you agree with them.

>OTOH people with less education can often be pretty arrogant and run roughshod over expertise and scientific consensus because they don't respect or value education and knowledge.

totally true though.

Anyways all you're saying is that people who learn more are smarter, right? The whole point of midwit meme is just that people think they're smart for learning the basics of something without getting too deep, and think they're the smartest because they can follow the consensus well, and will pat themselves on the back for it even if they dont know why they should agree really, or what makes people disagree.

You disagree with my claim that this happens to people in higher education and I guess it's fair if you compare it to the same type of person but who isnt well educated. But it's way more insufferable when they are educated cause you cant just call them an uneducated retard like a lib elitist and have done with it, cause they have the certificate to proooove they're smart. There's pretty much no difference in mentality between the college educated arrogant midwit and the dropout starcraft gamer who googles everything and thinks theyre hot shit arrogant midwit

It applies to almost the entire professional/academic caste in the liberal west at this point, from journos to lawyers to doctors, STEMlords, etc. This wasn't always the case but massive social degeneration + deterioration of the educated system etc have rendered so-called "educated people" a kind of stupid guardian caste for liberal capitalism. People who can usually apply a specific kind of technical knowledge very well, who have rehearsed an encyclopedia of "facts" but who are unable to form analysis or construct a non schizo narrative & who are totally absorbed in their own interests (usually revolving around a lifestyle of consumption). A lot of these people are totally incompetent and are loyal to the system because it ensures their life of hedonistic consumption. In most of these professions the biggest, most immoral and valueless idiots & asskissers rise to the top which is how you get braindead CIA puppet literal pant-shitters like Scomo as PM of Australia.

The term "inverse cripple" relays a similar meaning.

>>392006
>your whole post is actually just describing midwits, just uneducated ones

This. The people he's describing are themselves a kind of midwit, people with mildly above average intelligence who drastically over-estimate their level of knowledge/understanding of the world, usually possess a heavy ego and are completely impervious to any kind of criticism & incapable of self-reflection and introspective analysis/thinking.

It's difficult to tell who is worse, the hordes of karen/schizo conspiracy posters who "research" shit via memes and shitty youtube videos possibly have a larger social effect in the era of covid & Q-Anon, but the cult of science & academics in the liberal west serve a similar function to religious institutions in the past, ie to mask, justify and defend the ruling the system.

The term midwit is useful even if only in informal use.

There is a big difference between being able to actually think & form a concrete analysis or narrative that makes sense vs being about to memorize technical knowledge & recall an encyclopedia worth of facts.

That the replication crisis in the sciences (both social and natural) is such a huge issue to the point that the majority of studies period can't be replicated indicates that the majority of people with said advanced degrees in research fields are fucking dumb. Fields that require more technical capabilities & less actual thinking/forming of hypotheses etc are less affected but there is no reason to believe that the people involved in these fields are any less highly educated idiots.

If you actually the research papers & look into the methodology which most highly praised academic and scientific studies utilize you'll realize that these people are absolute fucking idiots.

This doesn't mean turn to memes/googling for "research", the entire idea that the dichotomy is between trust "The science" vs trust schizo boomer conspiracy theory Karens is a false one. Most legitimate, actually fucking intelligent scientists today are borderline suicidal & depressed as fuck, they will tell you this exact same shit.

yeah but thats the difference between an "expert" and an "intellectual". An expert knows alot about one domain whilst an intellectual plays with and synthesizes ideas. The west produces tons of experts because capitalism and technological society requires them, but it hates intellectuals because they question the system. Thats why there's such a focus on "vocational" college education aka "we need more doctors and engineers and accountants, not sociologists or anthropologists" line you always hear conservatives say

>That the replication crisis in the sciences (both social and natural) is such a huge issue to the point that the majority of studies period can't be replicated indicates that the majority of people with said advanced degrees in research fields are fucking dumb
thats not what it indicates you dumbass, the replication crisis is entirely a product of underfunding of science, scientists competing for limited grant money need to make their proposals flashy and exciting to have a bigger chance of getting it funded, rather than replicating an existing study which is boring. If science aka government funded general research were funded properly to a higher level there would be no "replication crisis" which is a hell of a more logical explanation than thinking physicists are dumb or something.
>Most legitimate, actually fucking intelligent scientists today are borderline suicidal & depressed as fuck, they will tell you this exact same shit.
thats because they had to spend years of borderline to actual poverty in grad school grinding away for a probably abusive advisor who doesn't let them graduate because they want to hold on to the free research labor for as long as possible, only to graduate into a job market where your chance of getting a tenured track job is super small, meaningwhile you have to slave away at part time positions, adjunct teaching with no benefits, and maybe a post doc or two and finally you end up at 45 with an overweight, stressed, health problems, no money, and nothing but a piece of diploma paper for it.

Try looking at the economics of science and their actual lives before calling scientists midwits you fool

It's true tho, did you know that most people that study sociology don't become leftists like you think they do? Most of the skills their learn goes toward shit like marketing and public relations. They lives-off the hardwork of workers and the ingenuity of engineers and doctors just like capitalists do.

>The west […] hates intellectuals because they question the system.

Intellectuals ARE the tools of the fucking system. Their purpose is to justify the current political model just like priests did in the past. Intellectuals are anti-action (which is anti-marxist) and idealists (they think the shitty papers they write will actually convince people to fight for change, not actual material conditions). Intellectualism is cancer, we should follow the Mao method and send them all to the field where they will learn the values of hardwork and modesty.
Journalists, intellectuals, politician, managers, all scum that deserve death or reeducation through work. We need actually educated people, not mental masturbators that think they can decide what's good for us just because they spent 5 years at some random institutions that gave them a shiny diploma.

Redditors demanding sources isn't what the midwit meme is meant to mock. It's meant to mock the general pretention of those types and their proclivity toward demanding sources for what should be common knowledge or intuitive, things that don't need sources in any reasonable context. More importantly, it mocks their blind faith in academia.

The idolization of intellect is ironically unintelligent. The desire to rank people solely in terms of raw intelligence is reactionary, IQ is reactionary. It's true that intelligence shapes the world at the most decisive scales, in the sense that we live in Newton's world, that the great intellects of the past literally structure the environment we live in on every level. Intelligence alone is not enough. Intelligence alone will not give you will, grit, valor, bravery, nobility, principle, determination, virtue.

Intelligence itself is a multidimensional factor. The question of whether there is even such a thing as general intelligence is an open question. It may be the case that intelligence is always highly specialized, and that we've defined measures of intelligence in a circular way to equate the ability to pass the tests that measure the ability to past tests with intelligence. Polymaths may not have some extra general intellectual capacity but merely a mastery of multiple specific intelligences. That said, it's perfectly conceivable that there are basic neurophysiological differences between individuals, differences in the density of neural connections between different brain regions, different purely mechanical ways in which information is more efficiently stored and retrieved that put a genius in a category of their own above and beyond neurotypicals. Mathematician John von Neumann for example displayed extraordinary cognitive abilities at a young age, had an exceptional eidetic memory, could learn things at a faster pace, etc. But there were things he couldn't do. The genetic contribution to intelligence is not the end of the story because intelligence isn't enough.

To use a somewhat patronizing metaphor, consider a loyal dog. The dog is not as intelligent as its master, though it is capable of things their human is not. The dog's lack of genius is not a strike against it, because its competence is in a different domain.

Similarly prejudices about intelligence are often deployed against the working class in a reactionary way, e.g. they deserve their lot because they aren't smart enough, that they bring their oppression on them because they are not smart enough to deserve quality education or stress-free environments or leisure time to grow or develop their capacities. When in reality many great minds came from the poorer classes, and many great scientists and leaders came from the Soviet Union who grew up as peasants.
