If he really wants to prove how good he is he'd have to go pro and Cuba doesn't let you do that. That's why so many leave the island to achieve their dreams

Look up "Cuba pro boxing" or "pro boxing Cuba ban" you'll get a lot of information.

I see articles from 2013 claiming that Cuba withdrew the ban on cubans going pro but i cannot think of any cuban pro boxers (maybe I'm misinformed and they do exist now I'd like to see them). It's always been they have to leave to fight professionally.

The top fighters in the pro ranks is where you prove how good you are

They are free to join the Olympics as professional boxers are allowed now.

Many of the pros at this Olympic lost already.

Not every boxer should have to subject themselves to Don King promotions, walking out in Law Vegas ringside to Red Hot Chili Pepper music

You are right they are free to go fight in the Olympics (the pros) and I am not knowing "la cruz" he's clearly an excellent fighter.

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense though for canelo (best in his weight class) to go fight for a medal for free when instead could use that same energy to make $30 million dollars.

Basically i wish Cuba would just let these fellas fight anywhere they like if they wish to do so.

They do the same thing with baseball players they lease out players to Asia leagues

https://www.npr.org/2019/06/12/731966442/trump-will-play-ball-with-mlb-on-cuban-players-if-league-helps-with-venezuela#:~:text=President%20Trump%20has%20resumed%20talks,teams%20without%20having%20to%20defect.

Speaking of that found this random article that clearly never came to any fruition

This isn't the real life case at all.

Even china let's their boxing athletes go pro while still living in china

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xu_Can

And the UFC had a female champion from china who still lives in china. How is your idea practical?

Chinas idea works better than Cubas if you want to grow your influence in the world and increase support for your government style

Let's compare cuba and china in the UFC.

In the UFC the best cuban fighters are two cuban defectors: Jorge masvidal a Ardent Trump supporter who even campaigned with trumps son across Florida and constantly talks about horrors of cuba.

Secondly Yoel Romero a former Cuban Olympic wrestler who won medals and during the recent protest was a very supporter of the protest and against the government.

Then you have Zhang weili who goes out there with a Chinese flag, does interviews from china, and carries herself with class showing people a side from china they are not used to in western media while beating down western athletes.

Who is going to make their countries socialist goals more achieve here Cuba or china?

Comparing guanos to actual citizens is very disingenuous. At least compare with Cuban athletics or with HK athletics.

That's the problem right there. Cuba doesn't let the comparison happen.

If Cuba had fighters like the guy this post is about doing interviews on national television talking about how he likes Cuba and the good parts of it and saying it post fight it shapes the view of Cuba in the average civilian world wide.

Cuba by their decision on athletes only allows worldwide fans to witness the opinions of the defectors who speak badly of Cuba and that is what informs the fan watching of what Cuba is.

Meanwhile china allows athletes who support china to compete across globe and talk good of it and promote it. Improving the opinion of china.

I don’t think you understand what professional boxing is. Pro boxing isn’t actually the best of the best, you’ll occasionally get technical fighters like Mayweather who are actually good, but their fights is not organized to test skill but simply what would be “cool” and a fortuitous match, not how good fighters are.

Cuba has other forms of soft power that it can rely on. Compromising its socialist vision (unlike China's revisionist one) on athletics undermine the optics of socialism itself. How can Cuba sell others the dream of socialism if it does not want to rethink how sports is structured and encouraged?
