As regards the last question: I think one of the advantages they have is that if you google shit like "economics without maths" you'll get recommended the Austrians, because rather than using maths they derive everything from just-so stories about human psychology, theoretically derived from axioms but really working back from a cut-out conclusion. Modern mainstream macro is so into LARPing as physics that it struggles to just say: "Read a HS econ textbook my dude, no maths there", so Austrians fill the gap.
