>During his writing career, he authored 33 books, with one book coauthored alongside Edward Ricketts, including 16 novels, six non-fiction books, and two collections of short stories. He is widely known for the comic novels Tortilla Flat (1935) and Cannery Row (1945), the multi-generation epic East of Eden (1952), and the novellas The Red Pony (1933) and Of Mice and Men (1937). The Pulitzer Prize-winning The Grapes of Wrath (1939) is considered Steinbeck's masterpiece and part of the American literary canon. In the first 75 years after it was published, it sold 14 million copies.

Is he based or cringe? 'The Grapes of Wrath' is a powerful working class novel that was hugely influencial but towards the end of his life he ended up supporting the vietnam war for some reason.

yeah
>In 1967, when he was sent to Vietnam to report on the war, his sympathetic portrayal of the United States Army led the New York Post to denounce him for betraying his liberal past. Steinbeck's biographer, Jay Parini, says Steinbeck's friendship with President Lyndon B. Johnson influenced his views on Vietnam. Steinbeck may also have been concerned about the safety of his son serving in Vietnam.
In fairness alot of americans were pro vietnam I mean its possible that had he lived longer he would have turned against the war

>In 1939, he signed a letter with some other writers in support of the Soviet invasion of Finland and the Soviet-established puppet government.

Jack London is way more based. He could write good story combined with rudimentary Marxist theory instead of whatever the kind of faux folk populism of Steinbeck.

I couldn't imagine Steinbeck contemplating his legacy, and wondering if a future generation of soylent humans would ask if he was 'based or cringe'.
The fact is he lived 10x the life any of you ever will. Same for Orwell and London.

This. And unlike Steinbeck, London actually came from a working class background and knew firsthand the struggles of the proletariat.
