Centrists aren't real, their "apoliticism" just means wholesale adoption of the political establishment in their particular society. For instance, consider American "centrists" (neoliberal Democrats and RINOs) who, due to their opposition to basic social-democratic reforms like single-payer healthcare, are actually extremely far to the right of the global political spectrum. Likewise, a Cuban centrist (ie affiliating neither with market "reformers" nor hardliners) would still be decisively far-left on a global scale. Centrism is the ideology of ignorants. Those without convictions stand for nothing but the continuation of the status quo.

Having a shifting overton window means that ideas that would have once been considered centrist 30 years ago are now considered to be left wing .

Centrist Ideas like full employment and social security programs used to be the left wing edge of conservative parties (yes back in the day there was bipartisan support for these ideas making them centrist) , now they are considered to be left wing mainstays and the conservatives won't even consider supporting them.

All it takes to be a centrist is to not shift with the times. For example if the overton window shifts back to the left again then people who hang onto ideas considered to be left wing now will end up in the center.
