 No.361262[Last 50 Posts]

He was a corrupt, right-wing leader so RIP to this guy but what the fuck is happening in Haiti.

>Haitian President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated after a group of unidentified people attacked his private residence, the country’s interim prime minister said in a statement Wednesday. Moïse’s wife, First Lady Martine Moïse, is hospitalized, interim Premier Claude Joseph said.

>Joseph condemned what he called a “hateful, inhumane and barbaric act,” adding that Haiti’s National Police and other authorities had the situation in the Caribbean country under control. The killing late Tuesday comes amid deepening political and economic stability and a spike in gang violence.

>The Haitian Embassy in Canada, in a tweet, also confirmed Moïse was killed.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/07/07/haiti-president-jovenel-mose-assassinated-at-home-says-official.html

WSWS take on him:

>Biden is continuing the policy of Trump in backing the US puppet against popular opposition. Moïse’s rise to the presidency, however, was engineered under the Obama administration and, in particular, by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her husband, ex-President Bill Clinton, who was named UN special envoy to Haiti. They previously had pushed the 2011 presidential candidacy of Moïse’s predecessor, the carnival singer Michel “Sweet Micky” Martelly, a political ally of the right-wing death squads that were the legacy of the US-backed dictatorship of the Duvalier family, which exercised a reign of terror over the country for three decades.

>The chief attraction of both these right-wing puppets was their subservience to US imperialism and the profit interests of the clothing sweatshop, agribusiness, tourism and mining sectors extracting wealth from the impoverished country.

>Moïse’s rule has been characterized by a steadily tightening dictatorial grip over the Haitian state. He not only dissolved the country’s parliament—ruling by decree for over a year—but has also stripped the country’s local officials of their power. He has employed assassination, massacres and police state repression against his opponents. Armed gangs led by former and current police have been unleashed against neighborhoods in the capital of Port-au-Prince as well as areas of the countryside to crush opposition and intimidate workers and the oppressed rural poor.

>Popular opposition grew against the Moïse regime, fueled by his personal involvement in a corruption scheme that saw the outright theft of some $4 billion in Petrocaribe aid provided by Venezuela in the form of loans and cheap oil that was resold on the world market.

>Once oil prices collapsed and the aid dried up, Moïse demonstratively aligned himself with the Trump administration’s campaign of sanctions and military threats against Venezuela. At the same time, his government implemented draconian IMF-dictated austerity measures that drove up fuel costs, devalued the national currency and drastically deepened already intolerable levels of poverty, leading to massive protests in July 2018 demanding Moïse’s ouster.

According to the Miami Herald the assassins got into the compound by announcing on a megaphone in an american english accent that they were DEA agents

>The assailants claimed to be agents with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, according to videos taken by people in the area of the president’s home. Moïse, 53, lives in Pelerin 5, a neighborhood just above the hills in the capital.

>On the videos, someone with an American accent is heard saying in English over a megaphone, “DEA operation. Everybody stand down. DEA operation. Everybody back up, stand down.”

Sounds like he might've done the Ngo Dinh Diem speedrun. Let's see who the new prime minister (appointed yesterday) is:

>Haiti President Jovenel Moïse has tapped Ariel Henry, a former minister of interior and respected neurosurgeon who once charted the country’s public health response to the deadly cholera epidemic, as his latest prime minister.

>But the de facto way in which Henry, 71, got the job — there has been no parliament since January 2020, and Moïse, ruling by decree, did not seek a political agreement for making the appointment — may not help tamp down Haiti’s increasingly volatile political and constitutional crisis.

>Henry, who has a background in public health and trains future doctors in between surgeries, first came onto the larger political scene in the early 2000s as a leading figure in the opposition Democratic Convergence movement fighting to force then-President Jean-Bertrand Aristide from power after the opposition accused him of committing fraud in the 2000 elections.

>He later became one of the seven members of the U.S.-backed “council of sages” that chose Haiti’s new transition government led by Florida resident Gerard Latortue after painstaking deliberations.

Article connecting some of the mercs (and allegedly the vehicles) to the Boulous family of Lebanese-Haitian boojies, and another businessman named Dimitri Vorbe.

>The Haitian Times reported Solages also used to work as a security guard for both Reginald Boulos and Dimitri Vorbe, two prominent members of Haiti’s tiny bourgeoisie. Although initially friendly to him, they both became bitter opponents of Moïse. Boulos was also a prominent supporter of previous coups in 1991 and 2004 against President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

>The Boulous family is one of the wealthiest in Haiti and owns a pharmaceutical company that, in 1996, was responsible for poisoning scores of children with its tainted fever medicine, some fatally. Since the July 6-8, 2018 national uprising against the IMF-dictated hike of fuel prices, Boulos has attempted to recast himself as a popular and progressive figure (after one of his stores was burned and looted), heading a political party called the Movement of the Third Way (MTV).

>Many believe Boulos is the intellectual author and financial backer of Moïse’s murder. “Solage’s employment by Boulos and centrality to the operation appears to confirm the growing popular consensus in Haiti that this controversial merchant-turned-politician was the principal backer of Moïse’s assassination,” explained journalist Kim Ives, continuing:

>"A lot of factors have been pointing to his involvement: The arrival of the mercenaries in nine brand new Nissan patrol vehicles without license plates suggests that they were vehicles coming from the Nissan dealership owned by Reginald Boulos. The Haitian people have already concluded that Boulous was behind the assassination and have dechoukéed [uprooted] the dealership, Automeca, that he owned.”

Its seems the assassins are claiming they were contracted by a Miami based security company ran by a Venezuelan gusano

https://archive.is/2fJkg

>Seventeen Colombians and two Haitian Americans from South Florida are in custody in Haiti. A person who interviewed the detained Colombians in Haiti said the men claimed to have been recruited by an under-the-radar firm in Doral called CTU Security It is run by a Venezuelan émigré, Antonio Enmanuel Intriago Valera.

>Intriago’s CTU is formally registered as the Counter Terrorist Unit Federal Academy LLC, and was incorporated in Florida in 2019, under his name, and it has filed annual reports in the two successive years. It lists a member named Arcangel Pretel Ortiz, who had run a now-defunct security firm of his own called Taktical Consulting Corp.
>Known in Venezuelan expat circles in South Florida, Intriago would boast of his police background in the South American country. At times, said one who knew him but did not want to be identified in the widening story, Intriago claimed to have connections to or to have worked directly for U.S. agencies.

This was pretty common in the cold war if anything it's good that the bourgeoisie are not united.

It’s actually really common for the US to do that. So that they can always play the good guys whenever one of their stooges goes out of line and pissed off everyone. The US initially supported Castro against their old lapdog Batista because they didn’t know that he’s a communist.

Because he wasn't.
Fidel is based af but we have to be honest about things, the Fidel Castro that fought in Sierra Maestra against Batista wasn't a commie (Raul and Che were though) he seemed to be a liberal with succdem reforms, and he wasn't even going to be president, but leader of the military.

It was only after he got cozy with the USSR and ordered US refineries in Cuba to process Soviet oil instead of American that the US barked at the idea, and Castro said "Fuck it" and started nationalizing US companies, like the United Fruit Company.

It was then that the US started plotting against Castro and launched Bay Of Pigs, and during the speech* Castro openly declared the Cuban Revolution a socialist revolution, surprising and confusing a lot of people that would later join the anticommunist bandits.

The first constitution that declared Cuba a socialist state was made as late as 1975.

*Embed, the speech.
